Program Overview
In this concentration, you'll learn hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques by integrating these traditional processes with contemporary practices, such as installation and other sculptural techniques. Technical skills, aesthetic awareness, and craftsmanship are addressed. Focus is given to the principles and elements of design, as well as the design process.
You will not only learn about clay sculpture but also how to fire your work in the kiln and calculate glazes. You will also utilize the 3-D printer and laser cutter and will have access to the College's state-of-the-art maker space. Unique upper-level courses help you develop connections within your imagery while learning how to present work to galleries and apply for grants and commissions. Faculty and visiting artists will speak about how you can carve your own niche in the contemporary art world.
With the 3-D concentration, you'll develop a personal body of work that can be used for application to graduate school or to gain employment in a variety of art-related fields, such as ceramics instructor, ceramics technician, curator, and arts administrator in a museum or arts organization.
Laptop Requirements
In addition to the general laptop requirements, incoming studio art students have specific requirements for their program.
Ceramics and 3-D Facilities
The ceramics facilities include a large studio area with separate kiln rooms with clay- and glass-fusing kilns. Other equipment includes twelve potters wheels of various types, a large slab roller, and extruding equipment.
The large 3-D studio is equipped with power equipment and tools and is also a space where stage sets and designs are constructed for the performing arts.
Accreditation
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art: 3-D Concentration is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
