The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with reviewing and monitoring research with human subjects to ensure that the rights and welfare of research participants are protected.
Endicott College is committed to the highest ethical, professional, and legal standards in all matters relating to human-subjects research. Endicott students, faculty, staff, and personnel engaged in research involving human subjects are required to follow College policies and IRB procedures before beginning research activities.
The IRB reviews research involving human participants prior to the research being conducted. This includes research conducted by faculty, staff, students, and personnel, regardless of location or funding source. Research, including recruitment and data collection, may not begin until the project has been reviewed and approved, or otherwise determined by the IRB.
IRB guidance, forms, templates, training instructions, and instructional materials are housed on the Endicott College IRB Canvas page. IRBNet is used for formal project submission, review, and documentation. Researchers should consult the IRB Canvas page before preparing or submitting a project.
Exempt research does not mean that no review is necessary. Exempt status is a category of IRB determination that must be made and documented by the IRB before the research begins.
All students and personnel involved in human-subjects research are required to complete CITI training before engaging in research activities.
Research proposed by external investigators involving Endicott students or employees must be sponsored by an Endicott administrator and reviewed and approved by the Assistant Vice President of Research and Planning and the IRB.
Applications are typically reviewed within 30 days of submission. Projects that involve greater than minimal risk or require full board review may require additional time. Researchers should plan accordingly and submit materials well in advance of any planned recruitment, data collection, thesis/dissertation deadline, or presentation timeline.
